Madson Leaves Phils for Birth of Child

Manager Charlie Manuel raised some eyebrows Wednesday afternoon when he turned to Brad Lidge to close the door on a 8-6 win over the Rockies.

It was Lidge’s 100th save in red pinstripes but his first of the season.

Lights out Lidge’s 1-2-3 inning completed the sweep in Colorado but it also raised concerns about why Madson wasn’t available to finish the win off for the second straight night. Was Mad Dog hurt? Was his arm tired?

Turns out he wasn’t hurt but instead was with his wife as she gave birth.

“Amaro: Madson has left the team to be with his wife who is having a baby in LA.,” tweeted Inquirer sports writer Bob Brookover.

Congrats! All Phillies fans can now breath.

No timetable yet for when Mad Dog will rejoin the Phils. It is however exciting to see Lidge look back in form just in case Madson can’t get the job done down the stretch.

And in the meantime, righty Scott Mathieson is headed west to join the Phillies as they open a four-game series in San Francisco, according to Philly Sports Daily.
