One Lucky Dog

In a bear-versus-beagle spat, a Pocono Mountain pet was one lucky dog.

Susan Chappell let 6-year-old Heather out the door in Pocono Lake at about 6 a.m. Wednesday and said she heard a sudden commotion. Heather was barking at two bear cubs that had climbed up trees when a mother bear came out from under the porch and attacked.

Chappell and her 16-year-old daughter Emily rushed the bear, screaming and yelling, and Emily shoved it as they scooped Heather up and ran inside, Chappell said.

After emergency surgery for bad bites on the rear and abdomen, veterinarian Nichole Danova said Heather is recovering.

It's a reminder that bears frequent wooded eastern Pennsylvania, and "Even though the Poconos are getting more populated, this was their home first," Chappell said.
