Mothball Dangers
It's almost time to shed off the wool coat, the scarves, the sweaters and jump into slingbacks and camis! Woohoo!
If you're like me, you're probably putting some of your heavier clothes away for the season, by now. But, here is a word of caution for you: If you use mothballs to preserve your clothes (I don't know who would want to smell like an old lady, but to each his own!) they can be hazardous to your pet's health!
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) has managed more than 100 cases of mothball poisoning in the past year.
Napthalene, a chemical in some mothballs, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdonminal pain, swelling of the brain, seizure, kidney and liver damage, coma, and even death if ingested, according to the APCC.
If you must use mothballs, make sure to store them away properly. If your pet does accidentally eat mothballs, seek medical attention right away.
Some alternatives to mothballs are drycleaning your clothes prior to storage, putting cedar shavings in small canvas pouches in with your clothes, or storing your clothes in plastic containers with air tight seals (plastic containers is what I use).
It's important pet owners know what poisons lurk in their homes and try their best to keep them safe!
