The Wilma Theater kicks off its Season Teasers series with a play reading on January 5. But they can't tell you what the play is.

The Wilma Theater’s annual Season Teasers series features rehearsed readings of plays under consideration for the upcoming season. Featuring accomplished actors (including Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham), the readings are free, and audiences are invited to participate in discussions and offer their input on the performances.

But the month-long series kicks off January 5 at 7:30 p.m. in curious fashion: The Wilma can’t tell you the play’s title or who wrote it.

What they can say is that it’s a brand-new piece about romance and sexual health in the 19th century, by a playwright who’s had two plays produced by the theater in the past five seasons. The reading will be directed by Blanka Zizka, and will feature Miriam Hyman, Ben Lloyd, Ross Manson, Mary McCool, Sarah Sanford, Luigi Sottile and Juliana Zinkel.

The schedule for the rest of the month features “Leaving” by Vaclav Havel; “Boom” by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb; and “Language Rooms” by Yussef ElGuindi. Details are available here.

Tickets are free, but must be reserved ahead of time by calling 215.546.7824 or emailing tickets@wilmatheater.org.
