All Hail the Hoagie!

Hoagiefest is back!

Attention Hoagie lovers! Get into gear, because your favorite time of the year is finally here!

Hoagiefest 2009 kicks off June 1. This will be the second year for the two-month long homage to Philly's official sandwich.

What started last year as an obvious Wawa marketing ploy to sell more delicious sandwiches, quickly grew into a way for Philadelphians to celebrate the tastiest mixture of meats, cheeses, spices and sauces.

Hoagie lovers missed the event so much they started an online petition to bring it back. It also doesn't hurt that you can pick up a Shorti for $3 during the promo. Let's hope this becomes a yearly tradition.

Speaking of tradition, do you know the origin of the hoagie?

There are a few theories, but the most widely held is that the sandwich originates from Hog Island in Southwest Philadelphia.

The hoagie (or at least the name) was brought to the City of Brotherly Love by Italian-Americans working in a temporary ship yard on the island during World War I. That shipyard was disbanded and eventually transformed into Philly International.

While the actual design of the sandwich is virtually no different from a sub or hero, we all know the Philly bread and sandwich fixin's make it superior.

Now, everyone has their own favorite hoagie and we want you to tell us your own tasty original recipe. Send in your creative creation and it may be featured right here.
