Food Fest: Cuba Libre, Eulogy, Jamaican Jerk Hut and More…

First up is Eulogy Belgian Tavern in Old City, who dished up authentic Belgian frietjes (kinda like thick French fries)sprinkled with sea salt. This twice-fried treat is served with a mayo/mustard dip. Try the fries with a glass of one Eulogy’s famous Belgian draughts and you won’t be disappointed.

The Jamaican Jerk Hut on South Street (they also just opened a store in Landsdowne) offered one of the most popular dishes of the day, jerk chicken served with rice and peas. The chicken is seasoned with a special Jerk Hut blend of ginger, thyme, all-spice, onion and soy. The dish received rave reviews from many in the crowd and was so good that people stood in a seemingly endless line to get a taste.

New discovery of the day had to go to Max and David’s International Kosher Cuisine. This Elkins Park restaurant, which is only a few years old, operates under strict supervision of the Community Kashrus of Greater Philadelphia. The apple bread pudding is a real treat covered in hot caramel and walnuts.

Le Champignon de Tokio served delicious, fresh vegetarian sushi at the festival. Located in Society Hill the restaurant also features a bed and breakfast and sushi making classes taught by Le Champignon’s owner, Madame Saito.

Other notables at the Culinary Celebration include Argento’s Pizzeria and Family Restaurant of Roxborough, which served up heaping helpings of traditional Italian goodness in their meatball sandwiches, Keating’s River Grill who offered a delectable crab cake sandwich with French fries and a side of tomato bisque and Cuba Libre. This Old City stapled dished a barbecue rib sandwich (shredded guava rib meat and Criolla slaw on a toasted brioche roll).
