Something about cold temperatures makes us crave a good Thai meal—it must be the way Thai spices warm us up from the inside out on frigid January evenings.

But unfortunately, at least in our circle of friends, there's a common gripe: "Philly's got no good Thai restaurants!"

We, however, beg to differ. See below.

MyFoxPhilly: White Elephant Thai

MyFoxPhilly has picked White Elephant as the area’s best Thai food for back-to-back year now—and we can’t say we’re surprised. Somewhat of a hidden gem (it’s tucked away in a suburban Genuardi’s shopping center), the restaurant offers a wide range of traditional and modern Thai dishes that range from kid-friendly to spicy like you wouldn’t believe.

While many Thai restaurants throw a couple of paintings of Vishnu up on the wall and call that “décor,” Chabaa is a legitimately chic addition to Main Street in Manayunk. But as attractive as the multi-level, colorful locale is, it’s the food here that’s the star. Chef/owner Moon Krapugthong grew up in Thailand and brought traditional recipes from her home with her to her Philadelphia, like grilled squid with chili-lime sauce and spicy red curry—although we’re told the pad Thai is not to be missed.

Authentic Thai fair in South Jersey? That’s what you’ll find at Thai Orchid Café in Marlton. But you’ll also find prompt service, a cozy atmosphere and prices that won’t leave your wallet empty. The pad Thai's a favorite, but regulars know to save room for dessert; we’re told the fried bananas, and coconut and mango ice cream are to die for.

Around Town pick: Lemon Grass Thai Restaurant

We will cross the Schuylkill River and brave the land of college students for one dinner at Lemon Grass, our pick for the city’s best Thai. While the location might not be optimal, and the décor lacking just a bit, the food more than makes up for it. Order the pad Thai, tulip dumplings, lemon grass soup or creatively named “Evil Jungle Princess” dish, and you will not be disappointed. Oh, and one more thing: Last time John Legend was in town, he brought his entire entourage to the pint-sized Powelton Village Thai spot. Need we say more?
