Graveyards are no longer just for the dead.
Just in time for Halloween, Laurel Hill Cemetery's annual Halloween Flashlight Tour takes you along dimly lit, winding pathways to meet some of its most haunting "residents." The hour-long tour also includes a story of the historic landmark.
The flashlight tour runs every half-hour beginning at 7 p.m. and when you're done, calm your nerves with cookies, hot apple cider and other creepy treats.
Remember, you'll only have the light from your flashlight to guide you, which can make it extra-freaky, so the tour is not recommended for kids under 12.
And for a tour that takes "dead zones" to a whole new level, Laurel Hill also has a cell phone tour.
For just the minutes you pay on your cell, you get a history of the 78-acre cemetery, interwoven with local actors providing the “voice” of the most notable members of the burial site.
As of now, the tour only takes place in the northern (and the oldest) part of the cemetery but plans are in the works to have the central and southern regions become part of the cell phone tour in the near future.
Some of the people heard on the tour include General Meade of Gettysburg fame, as well as the cemetery’s most recent member --the legendary Harry Kalas. Callers can also learn about the only person in Laurel Hill's long history to die upon his own grave and one of the city's most infamous rich guy/poor girl romances.
