The Philadelphia Art Museum ended a yearlong search Monday when they introduced Timothy Rub as their new leader.

The board of trustees voted unanimously to bring in Rub as the George D. Widener Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Philly Museum of Art.

Rub comes to Philly from the Cleveland Museum of Art where he served as director since 2006.

Rub comes to Philly with the tough task of replacing Anne d’Harnoncourt who died suddenly last year after leading the museum for more than 25 years. He also must deal with tough economic times that recently forced the museum to raise admission prices.

But, Rub seemed up to the challenges ahead.

“I am honored to become Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which is one of this country’s truly great museums and one of this city’s finest cultural assets,” said Rub.

“Its collections, exhibitions, conservation and education programs are much admired throughout the world. Working together with its generous and dedicated Board of Trustees and its accomplished staff, I am eager to build on the Museum’s many strengths as we embark upon a new and very significant chapter in the history of this institution. I also look forward to strengthening the Museum’s relationship with audiences here in Philadelphia and, indeed, throughout the entire region so that it can continue to play a significant role in the life of the community it was founded to serve.”

Rub, 57, will officially take the reigns of the museum in September.
