Hundreds Take a Chilly Plunge for Special Olympics

Want to jump into the Atlantic Ocean in the wintry cold water? Crazy, don’t you think?

But that won't stop about 600 fearless men and women from taking the Polar Bear Plunge for the Special Olympics of New Jersey on Saturday in Wildwood.

All of the proceeds from the fifth annual ocean dip will benefit the Special Olympics New Jersey. The SONJ provide sport training and athletic competitions for more than 21,000 children and adults with disabilities.

You don’t really have to “swim” in the water to take part in the fun. "Swimmers" can take a inch-deep dip in the chilly waters or just dive all the way in -- either way, you can say you took the “plunge” for SONJ.

A minimum of $100 registration and donation is all that is needed to participate, and of course your brave soul. Don’t want to swim? Spectators are greatly appreciated as well and they can give the freezing swimmers a towel after they get out.

There is still time to get in on the plunge. Registration opens at 10 a.m. Saturday and plunge time is called for 1 p.m.,

So don't forget your suit, and get ready for a chilly afternoon for a great cause.
