Philly's never one to shirk a historical moment. Spent the Fourth celebrating not just the country's 233rd birthday, but also Abraham Lincoln's 200th. Sure, that was technically in February, but it was way too cold to hang out on Independence Mall (5th and Chestnut streets) back then.

Head to the spot where America got its start for Lincoln 200: The Bicentennial Festival, going on now through July 5.

Organizers are billing the event as fun, free AND educational (who knew?), with the them of "Lincoln Then and Now" to tie the 16th president's effects in his time and the modern day. You can also learn about Lincoln’s surprising ties to Philadelphia, including his 1861 inaugural train tour on his way to Washington D.C., and Philly's roles in the Civil War, the Underground Railroad and the Civil Rights Movement.

Pavilions and exhibits share the following:

  • Lincoln: The Definitive Years (1860-1865)
  • Lincoln's Eye on Science
  • Abe in the Arts
  • Green Linc (eco-friendly efforts during and since the days of Lincoln)
  • Lincoln for Kids

Live music and other performances, historical reenactments and a craft marketplace round out the offerings.
